When
Great Britain's empire encompassed much of the world, the
sovereign was truly the coin of the realm. Sovereigns were
struck at their colonial mints in Bombay, Melbourne, Perth,
Sydney, Pretoria and Ottawa to provide coinage for the vast
empire. Today's most popular sovereigns were struck between
1871 and 1968 and include the monarch's Queen Victoria, King
Edward VII, King George V and Queen Elizabeth II. The reverse
has been the same since its introduction in 1813, the classic
design of Saint George slaying a dragon by the Italian engraver
Benedetto Pistrucci.
